What Is a Fashion Marketing Degree?

A fashion marketing degree provides a fine arts education in marketing, advertising, and promotion specific to the needs of the fashion industry. Fashion clothing, accessories, and other textiles are marketed differently than most other products, which requires specific techniques and approaches to consumer education. Many fashion marketing programs are offered in traditional on-campus settings as well as online. The degree can be earned as an associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s, and certificates are also offered by a number of schools.

What Can You Do with a Fashion Marketing Degree?

A fashion marketing degree prepares graduates to become fashion specialists in marketing, advertising, and management. Although the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not break out data on fashion managers, it does provide data on many closely related occupations. Advertising, promotions, and marketing managers may specialize in fashion after obtaining a fashion marketing degree. According to the BLS, the average salary for this occupation is $108,260 per year, with job growth expected to reach 14% between 2010 and 2020.1

Fashion marketing graduates may have opportunities as purchasing managers, buyers, and agents, acquiring and marketing fashion trends to consumers on behalf of their employers. The average reported annual salary for this profession is $58,360, with job growth prospects of 7% between 2010 and 2020.2

Those with a degree in fashion marketing who enjoy interacting with the public may be able to break into the public relations field representing fashion houses. Public relations managers and specialists help clients manage brand identities and public communications, at an average annual salary of $57,550.3 Job growth for public relations managers and specialists is expected to be strong, at 21% between 2010 and 2020.3

Prerequisites and Requirements

A relatively limited number of schools offer degree programs in fashion marketing, which can result in selectivity during the application process. Accredited traditional schools with a focus on fashion and the arts may be more selective than other institutions. Common criteria for prerequisites and requirements for admissions:

At the associate’s degree level, students are expected to have a high school diploma or GED. Selective schools will usually require a minimum high school GPA, and may require high school coursework in the arts. ACT or SAT scores may be required.

At the bachelor’s degree level, students should have a high school diploma or GED. More selective schools may give greater consideration to students with an associate’s degree in fashion marketing. Minimum high school GPAs and ACT or SAT scores are commonly required.

At the master’s degree level, students should have a bachelor’s degree in fashion marketing or general marketing, though other majors are sometimes considered. Experience in the fashion industry is a plus in many schools’ admissions criteria. Competitive scores on the GMAT or GRE are not usually required, but may be requested.

Typical Coursework

Although fashion marketers do not typically create fashions themselves, an understanding of the development process is crucial. Students learn about textiles, materials, and marketing angles along with how to spot emerging trends in the industry. Merchandizing and product placement and allocation are also areas of focus in most curriculums.
